From what I understand the softness and lightness of badger hair makes it especially useful for blending and softening edges in paintings

I don't know anything about who made it

from whatever materials they had at hand--but my guess is that this small lidded box is an example

There's a mark on the blade for Miller Brothers, and I believe it is an "ink eraser," a handy tool to use along with an ink pen when practicing one's Spencerian calligraphy! 19th century or very early 20th century I believe and really in excellent condition, with a beautifully shaped hardwood handle and steel blade. 5 11 16" l x 5 8" w.
