The lead ship of her class, HMS 'Colossus' entered service in 1886. She served with the Mediterranean Fleet until 1893, when she became a Coastguard ship. 'Colossus' later served with the Reserve Fleet and as a tender to the gunnery school HMS 'Excellent' at Portsmouth before was sold and scrapped in 1908.
